Your 5:2 article is biased and misleading - no one doing it does extended periods fasting, so the criticism is irrelevant.

Why not ask people who have done 5:2 for a period of time whether it is a fad or damaging? I have lost 23% of my body weight on it, and put my type 2 diabetes into an asymptomatic state, and normalised my high blood pressure - it works and it has made me much healthier over the last 14 months. It is well worth trying for anyone who needs to lose weight.
