Schedule/Scoring Formats - 'Doubleheaders vs league score median'.
Each week, the median fantasy points of all teams in the league is calculated by taking the middle number in a sorted list of scores of each team. Each team would get a win if they beat the league median and a loss if they lose to it.

The head to head concept is totally invalid because in fantasy football you have absolutely no control over how many points your opponent scores against you. Last year three (3) times the 9th worst scoring team beat the worst scoring team while one of those times the top scoring team beat the 2nd best scoring team. I outscored the two worst scoring team by 40 something points, but lost because I was unlucky to play against the highest scoring team. The head to head system causes stress, anxiety, and anger because I am always worried I could be playing the highest scoring team and lose while a bad scoring team beats another bad scoring team. Also if someone quits your league or neglects their team the team that is playing that team gets easy wins. A much better fantasy football scoring system would be to award the TOP 5 best scoring teams wins every week and the worst 5 scoring teams gets losses. I post the top 5 winners and standings every week. One team is 3-5 in head to head while that same team is 6-2 in top 5 scoring. Why should a TOP 5 scoring team be punished because of some random head to head schedule. Also one year I was 9-4-1 finished 1st in head to head. My team was not very good, but I was luck to play other teams that did not score well against me. I figured out my record the same year and I would have been 5-9 in top 5 scoring. The same year the overall highest scoring team went 6-8 in head to head, but would have been 11-3 in top 5 scoring. The best team did not even make playoffs just because of some random head to head schedule. Also in top 5 scoring if someone quits the league or neglects their team it does not effect the league at all because only the top 5 best scoring teams gets wins and nobody is playing directly against the team who quit posting low scores. I would like to have the option of selecting a top 5 scoring league if Yahoo could offer it.

Wow, people in the comments lack foresight. Sure, there might be more than 1 undefeated team at the end of the year in this format, but if that's teh case, then those teams would deserve to be undefeated. Tiebreakers would obviously be points scored, and then the top 4-6 teams would qualify for the playoffs with 1 week HTH elimination weeks against each other. This idea submitted is terrific and solves the problem of the 2nd highest scoring team losing to the highest scoring team just because of schedule.

I like how you call it "your idea". Matthew Berry has discussed this at length on his podcast that it's how the Stern Show League handles their scoring.
Granting commissioners the ability to edit team records would accomplish the same outcome.

Would median work better, instead of average? I think this format is a solid compromise between all-play and normal H2H.

I agree with the problem, but better solutions are available.
Your league can use "total points" ranking to determine the team which really was the best during the season.
Or, Yahoo can adopt cross-country scoring. -

What happens in an eight team league when a week's scores are:
90, 85, 80, 75, 70, 35, 25, and 20 ?
The average score for the league was 60 that week.
Five teams scored above the average, and three teams scored below it.
Will the five teams each receive a win while the three teams receive a loss?
It will look stupid for the league to have more wins than losses. -

I think Steven Bernier explained the problem with this rule precisely.
At the end of the season, a league could have several undefeated teams.
What a mess that would be! -

Add an option to allow for two-game weeks, which is comprised of:
(1) Game against your normal H2H opponent
(2) Game against the league average points that weekThe intention of this is to allow leagues the option to reduce luck's influence on standings.
For example, in week 1 team X scores the 2nd most points, but plays team Y who scored the 1st most points. Instead of getting frustratingly saddled with being 0-1, they'd at least be 1-1 in this setup.
Conversely, in the same week 1, team A scored the 2nd fewest points, but team B scored the fewest. Instead of team A getting a "cheap" win and sitting atop the standings, they would be 1-1 and team B would 0-2 for their horrific week.
I think this would be an easy implementation and would be a great option, particularly for the more serious / higher-stakes leagues.
Please considering adding for next season!

It seems to me that I could go undefeated HtoH while scoring sixth or lower on average. What a bumber! A win is a win no matter how little the margin, Look at it as a weak offense with a strong defense (or just dumb luck). To be deprived the trophy?????

There would be way to many undefeated teams. The arsenal always atleast 3 teams in a 10 man league that score high everywhere and would probly never fall below 5th place in scoring during any given week

I can see offering this in addition (TWO games per week) but I really don't like it replacing standard. This would indeed take away much of the H2H matchup. But having both would even out the luck some without ruining H2H.

So, just to clarify. you want the guy that finishes 5th in a 10 team league every week to win over a team that finishes 1st every week but week 10 where he finished 6th. Do I have that right?
No thank you.

I've tried total points and it sucks. This would be amazing though. My league would use this in a heartbeat.

Great idea. I have tried to think of ways to make my league more fair while keeping it interesting at the same time. This nails it!

Yahoo currently offers the traditional head-to-head scoring format as well as the total points format. My idea combines both. I'm personally not a fan of the total points concept because it takes the weekly excitement out of Fantasy Football. Sure it results in the most "fair" outcome at the end of the year but that isn't worth losing much of the fun. Head-to-head obviously is far and away the most common format but how much does it suck when you lose as the 2nd highest scorer in any given week? There's no fun in that, not when it's as if you can't play defense against your opponent. Why should the schedule have more of an effect than your skill at putting together a team.
Anyway, my idea is to have each week head-to-head, except you are head-to-head against EVERYBODY. The top 5 highest scores get wins that week, the lowest 5 get losses. It guarantees fairness because you will only win if you deserve a win. It also will make Sunday Night and Monday Night Football all the more exciting. Instead of just competing with your 1 opponent you are competing against everyone. Every week wins and losses will come down to MNF. Now that is fairness meets excitement. Sure this idea won't be for everyone but I just want Yahoo to make it an option for everyone. I think it would be very well received. Let me know your thoughts.
