Schedule/Scoring Formats - 'Doubleheaders vs league score median'.
Each week, the median fantasy points of all teams in the league is calculated by taking the middle number in a sorted list of scores of each team. Each team would get a win if they beat the league median and a loss if they lose to it.

We did this off-line ourselves as follows: Each week teams are ranked 1-12 based on how many fantasy points they scored. The top scoring team gets 12 "Power Points" , the second team gets 11 "Power Points", etc. We called this approach the "Power Rankings" and published our Standings each week by total "Power Points" accumulated. It seems like a way to award managers based on how well their team scored versus a Win or :Loss influenced by the score of the random team you are playing each week.
This year our 1st place team had 1 more Power Point then the 2nd place team.
We may switch to another web site that offers this options as a majority of our managers prefer this methodology.

The idea of each team playing each team every week
is so much more compelling -- and for all the reasons listed by those supporting this idea.
It does a better job of reducing the luck-of-the schedule.
It would greatly increase the probability of the best teams being identified during the season.
It would be easier for Fantasy Football players to understand.
Plus, it would be easier to get the computer code written correctly. -

I would think that the computer code writers would embrace this change. They wouldn't need to have the computer generate a schedule of which team plays which team for the league. They wouldn't need to store the schedule for use during the season. At the end of the week, they could simply rank the teams by their scores for the week to determine each team's wins and losses for that week.
Thus, it would require less computer code to program, less computer time to run, and less data capacity to store. -

I agree with JJ that head-to-head play often results in lesser teams making the play-offs because of the "luck of the schedule."
And I agree with Jim that having every team play every team every week is a better solution than what JJ suggested. -

I've seen this suggested by several different players.
Hopefully, it has been put up here enough times for it to be noticed. -

This idea has been posted multiple times. It's not a new thought.
And, it still doesn't really solve the problem. A team can have the sixth-best score several times. Another team that is a little better (and proves it by scoring more total points during the season) can have the seventh-best score several times. The result? The better team finishes below the lesser team.
Luck (or chance or whatever you call it) will always play a part. However, the better option -- the one that's easier to program in the computer and closer to fair for the best teams in the league -- is for every team to play every team each week.
Under the every-team-plays-every-team plan, a team which has the first or second highest scores a few weeks and the seventh highest score many weeks still finishes with a winning record, which it deserves. -

This season we once again had a classic example of why many people complain about head to head scoring in fantasy football. The team who scored the second most points in the entire league this season actually finished 8th. Talk about bad luck.
With that said, there is a certain excitement included in H2H play that you simply dont get in points leagues. This got me thinking, how can the two scoring types be mixed? Almost instantly I had a thought, and when I ran it by the people in our league they agreed that if it was an option, they would all vote for this type of scoring.
Its a really simple thought. For description purposes lets assume it is a 12 team league. Each week teams do not face just one team, they basically face everyone else in the league. Your weekly score is stacked up against the weekly score of the 11 other teams. The teams that end the week with one of the SIX highest scores for the week will be awarded a win. The bottom SIX teams will be given a loss. All other secondary scoring remains the same. The higher your total points are, the better chance you have of being higher up in the standings.
I think this idea would totally change your Fantasy Football offering for the better. As far as I can tell there is no option like this out there. It feels like it would be a simple tweak, but it would give leagues a much truer result at the end of the year while also giving managers the same feel and excitement of weekly H2H play.
Hopefully you find this suggestion interesting, I can assure you that I have two leagues full of teams that would instantly be switching to this scoring system next season and I am willing to bet thousands of others would follow suit.

I'm a huge fan of cross country scoring. Used to do it back in the day before online fantasy sports became popular. I had a year in fantasy football where I played the highest scoring team 6 out of 13 games that year. Needless to say I had little chance of making the playoffs despite being the third-best scoring team overall that year.

This format makes so much more sense than head to head matchups, and I hope Yahoo implements this.
In my league, I've had the second or third highest score for the week 4 times this season and still lost. It's not fair.

I love head to head format, but having the added component of playing against the median would really be compelling. Playing every other team every week, would lessen the excitement of the H 2 H component.

I call it "All-Play", and yes, it would be a nice option.

Check out some other suggested rules changes, such as the each-team-plays-each-team-each-week idea.
With that rule, no bye weeks exist regardless of whether your league has an even or odd number of players.
And, it clearly ranks teams by how well they did over the season. -

This is the BEST format because it determines a true champion instead relying on a random HTH schedule. My league has used it for years.

This is avoid someone getting screwed from playing the highest scoring team every week and offset a strength of schedule. By giving them points they deserve while still playing H2H.

I have sent several emails about making next years fantasy football league a combination of high points and head to head for next year. By basically splitting up the point you get for a win. With .5 h2h and .5 for top half for scoring. Please!!! It will make it more fair and competitive and millions of people will want to do fantasy this way. For viewing purposes. You would have 2 columns. One for H2H record. One for high score. And the total at the end that will be used for playoff purposes that will combine the .5 or 1 point scoring you will have weekly Either give 2 points a week with a whole 1. Or use a .5 system. For a total of 1 win

Yahoo does or did offer this but the problem was they didnt make the league turn into a playoff format finish league when the season ended. It simply ended with whatever the standings were. I wish this was offered to. What you do is you have the top scoring teams make the playoffs, THEN the playoffs start and is a head to head matchup. This way you get the best teams in the playoffs who rightfully earned it by scoring the most points, then the playoffs start to determine league winner. You get the best off both worlds. When I first started this fantasy football stuff one year I chose this format but later found out playoffs head to head mathups were not included so we manually scored on paper. Yahoo does have the technology.

I love this as well. Does anyone know of any sites that offer a format like this? We are willing to leave Yahoo to find better scoring formats to suit our league.

A big benefit of this type of league would be in regards to "dead-beat" managers. If someone fails to set a competitive line-up for a particular week, all the other teams would benefit rather than just the team that is playing the "dead-beat".
You could also leave in the H-to-H as a 10th point (for 10 team leagues). The five winning teams would get +1 in the league rankings for the week...hey, H-to-H is fun in terms of rivalries and bragging rights.

No, I believe that the primary benefit of this change would be the reduction in "luck" based on which week you play which team. Under this method, that part of the "luck" in Fantasy Football would be eliminated.

Jim - Why not make both an option? The added ability to customize your league is all I am asking for. Weather it be playing against all of the other teams in your league or playing against the league average, let us decide how we want to customize our league. Other sites have the option, why not integrate it into the Yahoo format?
