They MUST all default to an alphabetical sort order.
Users are welcome to choose to switch to a Newest or Oldest sort-order for the duration of their session, but only having an ALPHANUMERIC default allows owners, moderators, and seekers to be able to QUICKLY find the Folder or Link they want to use, or to QUICKLY discover that it doesn't exist so ask the owner to create it. (Not all owners allow members to add such as a Database, File, Link, Poll.)
The ONLY feature for which chronological order is always logical is the Calendar.
In the 3-or-4-tier set of Links stored in my "reference" group it is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING to set the sort-order to alphabetical, edit the entry (or find it still valid) then back-arrow to check the next entry and find that the order has reverted to crazy chronological!
We’ve introduced the ability to control for each group subscription, the view and sort orders for Photos, Conversations and Files. You could also control the navigation – what sub-section opens by default for photos and conversations.
At this point we do not plan to introduce the ability to configure the default navigation links (conversations, photos and files with the rest under “more” drop down)

Most of our members either don't know how or are not willing to figure out how to change their personal default settings, so we moderators end up getting their complaints and the group functions are made more difficult to use. Your product-development team is seriously wrong in assuming that date order is the best way to organize all files for all groups -- the issue obviously is not that there cannot be a default order for the entire group, since you have chosen to make date the default. So clearly you can give moderators, who deal with their groups every day and know them the best, the ability to set a different default and then give the individual members the option to override for themselves.
This is not so great, because each member has to 1/ Know about this feature to sort the view of files, 2/ find where it is, 3/ do it each time they connect (it doesnt save), and 4/ Do it each time for EACH GROUP they go to.
This is a major drag.
IT would be much better if the MoDERATOR, who designs the files section, could decide how the files are best presented to suit their membres.
There's still a bit of a glitch. When updating info in a file or adding a file, I get an error message every time stating 'an error has occurred while loading the content'. The new info doesn't show immediately. If I go out of the file I'm working with (back to the main 'file' heading), then return to the file I was updating, the new info is now there. I've used 2 different browsers (IE & Chrome) so that's not the problem. Please fix your fix.
thanks for fixing this!!!!
Moderators are unable to delete old files. While you are at it, please fix this.
Today we can't approve messages via email. Fix this too.
While you're at it, please make it possible for us to return to the last viewed name when we're maintaining our membership lists. Right now, it starts us all over at the top of the list and it takes hours to check each name in a 500+ name list.
When there are hundreds and hundreds of members in a group, it takes ages to find a name.
Mods are having to do the work that members should do and we do not get paid for this like you do, Yahoo programmers! How dare you wreck our files and increase our workload???
you can't even put them into alphabetical order at all anymore and they do not seem to be in date order, they are just scrambled like eggs. This makes them useless to members,
Alphabetical sort is by far the most common way to sort, it should be the default.
A return to alphabetical order ought to be the default setting for our files, links, databases, etc. The current date default order scrambles up groups with extensive contents in their group features.
We need more votes to get this one to be looked at. Tell your friends about it.
Why did Yahoo scramble up our files. Are they trying to get rid of groups completely? Must be.
Files used to sort alphabetically - why the change..? And the option to switch no longer works, as mentioned.
Providing the setting for the group moderator to choose. Wow - doesn't that seem simple..????
I agree we need to be able to sort files alphabetically!!! That is MUCH more useful than chronological. Having the alphabetical option on the actions drop down but it not working is very frustrating. PLEASE FIX IT NOW!!!! PLEASE FIX IT NOW!!!!PLEASE FIX IT NOW!!!!PLEASE FIX IT NOW!!!!
Alphabetical sorting makes the most sense. Someone once used the library analogy. Imagine going into a library and all of their books were organized by the date they arrived at the library and not in alphabetical order?
Well, Yahoo, you've done it again! You've made this problem worse instead of fixing it to default to an alphabetical sorting as most everyone has told you they prefer. Now the option to select an alphabetical sort DOESN'T WORK!! Please get your act together!! You are making things more difficult than they need to be for all the group users!
