Users should have to wait 24hrs instead of an hour to choose a best answer
Silver, who cares about best answer?
That answers should be sorted oldest on top is a completely different matter

I agree. Some of us work for a living and don't get home until after 5:00 PM.

The following example are just what I think is happening and I know
I don't have direct insight to why others choose best answers.
If you answer a question quickly, people often seem to forget to
give a best answer later.
Now, if they have to wait a day, odds are a lot of people will forget to go
back and pick best answers.
Also, I often see when they are multiple answer with close to the same information.
Some users gives the best answer to the newest answer since it is on top
by the default sort. So making this change should increase this problem.

Totally agree........it amounts to a form of point gaming, when users close out questions just an hour after asking them......always awarding the Best answers, to the same few users......who happen to be in their time zones . 24 hours would be fairer and give everyone a chance to answer.
Totally agree. It happens way too often that an answer is picked as "best" (or "favourite") when it is wrong or doesn't even answer the question. people from all timezones should have a chance to give a decent answer.
Unfortunately, askers once (before my time) had to wait 24 hours, but many impatient USAmericans complained and it was reduced to a mere hour
