You do understand that Yahoo is in a dire financial situation, is for sale, and is reducing it's investment in non-productive products, such as Groups, right?

"The company will reduce its investments in properties like Flickr, Yahoo Answers and Groups,"

That's because the ONLY funding that is keeping Groups around is coming from those adverts. Yahoo has reduced it's investment in Groups....

"Mayer said the Sunnyvale company will offload some of its real estate holdings and patents and focus on four content areas — News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle. At the same time, it will reduce investments in properties like Flickr, Yahoo Answers and Groups"/

*Mayer refers to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer

No advertisements = no Groups, unless you are willing to start paying for it. Only the absolute minimum of money and manpower is being put into Groups and Answers at the moment. After the sale of Yahoo, the new owners may well decide that neither are worth the cost output.

That tends to be one of the results, when Yahoo no longer invests money in one of it's products- in this case, Groups.

Remember, also, that just because a FREE product is popular, DOES NOT make it profitable. If it consumes more than it produces, then it will likely not continue to be supported.

Yahoo is in serious financial trouble. As a result, for the good of the entire company, the decision was made to stop investing in certain products, one of which is Yahoo Groups.

"As part of its effort to retool, Mayer said the Sunnyvale company will offload some of its real estate holdings and patents and focus on four content areas — News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle. At the same time, it will reduce investments in properties like Flickr, Yahoo Answers and Groups, and exit products such as Yahoo Games and Smart TV."

Like it or not, if a product isn't a PROVEN, CONSISTENT money maker, it will face reduced investment (allowing the sun to set on the product), or outright being dropped.

Yahoo is cutting back on it's investment in Groups and Answers. My guess is that they will slowly defund these areas, and allow the sun to set on these products.
