Please Do Not Destroy The Groups Message Archives...Some List Owners & Many Authors Passed Away
I have been a member here since before Yahoo took over from Onelist back in 1999 - so about 22 years I guess. I'm on a lot of author and fanfictions lists here plus run a few myself, These recent changes are disastrous to yahoogroups mailing lists future and functionality for the users of this service.
Personally I am VERY upset to discover that everything on the yahoogroups message lists is being destroyed. There are a lot of authors and a few list owners that have passed/died over the last 20 years or more here. Their groups, message posts, and stories only exist here on Yahoogroups. In some cases these messages/posts on the lists here are a bit of a memorial to them. Losing them is horrible, disastrous and heartbreaking for the members of the lists.
These fast and drastic changes are upsetting to all the members out there that use Yahoogroups. Having so much of the functionality taken away is making the site unusable. The interface at YG was a way of reading posts that we did not receive due to email issues, or from just joining the list and being able to read what prior posts there were. I've lost my email messages many times over the years due to problems with the servers or various issues but could always go the groups message archives here at YG to either forward a copy back to my email or just read them there. There are many users here that only use the YG Interface and do not use their email at all plus there were some that only used the Message Digest.
These changes you made have upset a lot of people out there. Now I'm seeing an exodus of some of group/lists off Yahoogroups to other sites because the list owners are very upset with the treatment they have been receiving here with the deletion of their group data. Am curious if you actually realise that by doing these terrible changes here you are effectively crippling the Groups here to the point of making the people running the lists leave. The regular users are very upset about the data loss of Message History, Message Digest, Email Updates, Conversations, Links, Photos, Files, and Folders. For list owners we are all upset to lose all of those but to also lose our ability to moderate and control our own lists is even worse. Add in the loss of data from those writers who passed away whose works we cannot read any longer due to the total destruction of the data. Plus cannot find any of the other groups out there.
I only recently found out about all of this so am quite upset. Have been trying to get my download requests done. So far doesn't look good - complicated, lengthy and frustrating. Sigh. Am very saddened to watch the destruction of Yahoogroups site after being here for all the changes from OneList to Yahoo over the past 22 years it is very depressing end to it. It used to be fun and helpful. Now it is dark, empty and unusable. Can see why many list owners are just getting the data and moving to another company. Have not yet decided what to do yet other than try to get my data. Will have to see when I have calmed down from all the stress that this has caused me.
