When you make a change to satisy a boss trying to make an impact in his position, ALWAYS give the end user the option to return to what they liked and used for years. That will then give the boss current feedback on whether his new idea is worth a darn. (I bet 90% of users will go back to what they knew) Try it and see if I am right.
