The mobile phone number, identification from the SIM is more safe than Google Authenticator. It's just that you must learn how to get this and IMEI and replace all funny approvals. I know it's not invented in the USA, neither does network security.
Just get the Mobile Subscriber Identity Digital Number, with the IMEI. It's just not available on Verizon, and bluntly, that is a Verizon and FCC issue.
You can't curse the rest of the world with their omissions. The phone number in the POTS /VoIP connection are different. -

SMS to the phone is the only safe way to authenticate you.
The problem arises because the password approves a session, many log-ins. When you have two phase approvals you must pass both the email password and an SMS to stop others pretending to be you. They can just copy your password. The 6 characters in an SMS cannot be intercepted and copied. It goes to your phone and you can pass it on and approve access. Without the phone, the access to the account should be restricted.
On the phone, they have MSISDN, IMEI and GPS. It is miles more secure. -

The mobile network is encrypted, so just send code with SMS, but understand that "messages" on Facebook/ Internet mediation is something else.
