The failure to link directly to a message I made or to another person's reply means that any discussion ends immediately on articles which receive a large number of comments. If an article is a failure and only receives 50 comments, my comment can be found as well as the person replying to me. But on many articles, there might be 1.5k or 5k messages which means I could search for a week and never find them.
