The reason you provided for stopping comments is "...to create a safe and engaging place for users..." which, I suspect, is complete hogwash. Opinions and debate are not supposed to be 'safe'. That is the whole point of free speech; to be able to express one's opinion without fear of censorship, but with the risk of disagreement and criticism. Whilst the quality of comment is often poor, that is more a reflection of people's frustration at being ignored by successive Governments on both sides of the Atlantic. Silencing it just makes the issue worse. Yahoo is guilty of the worst kind of journalistic cowardice.

Never understood this : USA - Free Country, Free Speech. Yet, if someone comments about someone's Race, Religion, Color that is regarded as Racist. Then what is FREE speech ? None.
No deleting of email account or handing ones mobile numbers ( conveniently labelled as 'code' sent for verification ) to Govt authorities to trace individual.
Mobile phone is the best tracking device to monitor and locate an individual.

3 ) Get rid of the "Flag As Inappropriate".

Especially the Young, who know nothing about anything, world carrying them on shoulders.
5 ) “SAFE PLACE” ? Let people have a war of words online, than a physical war on the streets. NO place is "SAFE" nowadays.YAHOO Comments 'were' the BEST in the world. Others have tried, but cant match. NO comparison to Yahoo at all. Yahoo was BEST!

True, It's not engaging if you can't actually engage with it. Most of the news stories are ripe for ridicule and desperately need a comments section to set the record straight.
