How can people making comments on news articles seem to be manipulating their numbers?

How can people making comments on news articles seem to be manipulating their numbers? @Lawrence87755 has over 50k likes on 5k comments. There are many samples of this. Also, stop allowing people to LIKE their own comments. This is really a stupid "feature".
