I really do not like the "new and improved" interface. I am a graphic designer, not a UI or UX designer but I want to add my two cents to this discussion...

    From my point of view:

First remove the right column, it is a waste of space, that, or at least give me the option to hide it. Why?, When I try to read my email in a low-resolution screen, the right column takes too much screen space. You want leave it there then make it icons instead. Did you really want to increase some screen space making the left column icons, instead of text, then do not waste it on the right column bigger than the left one.

Second: why do you choose to tell me what it is important for me, promotions I get it, social too but show me the rest of the emails i have even the ones I already answered, how can I manage my business if I cannot see my past emails. Do you want me to look for them in the “all emails” tab? Then the objective of sorting the them by tabs is wasted.

Third: PLEASE... take out the small icons shown between the select box and the email text; they are too distracting, you always want a cleaner interface, if this was your objective, then, doing things like this is a waste of resources. the less distracting UI the better. From my point of view, this is a really bad design choice...

Please learn a little bit of design principles. Take in considerations examples like this ones, "if you write all in bold then THERE IS NO BOLD" contrast is one of the basic principles of design (more on that later). Next principle i follow - "use fewer fonts as possible". Why? Because is too distracting and your message will be lost in chaos.why I'm saying this, because the icons break this design principle.

Additionally, showing the icons waste too much of the row space, why? Because it makes the email row too tall wasting vertical space.

More so, this language (english) is read from left to right, so, if you see the icons before the text this drive a way the sight of what is really important for the viewer, the data, the email you want to read, that is why you have an email isnt' it.

Learn a little bit about contrast, for example in regard of the left column with the old UI you had it right; we could personalize the user interface making it darker to improve readability. Now, we only have white and dark theme, which I think is the wrong choice, the ability to customize the theme would improve user experience. So, as I said before, contrast is one of the most important design principles you can learn. You always use the contrast to direct the viewer’s eye to the important part of the message you want to send.

This is only my take on this… I can still go on and on.

PLESAE, For the love of god, hire a professional UI / UX designer to guide you, I am not one of them by the way, I am just a freelance who do small design jobs from time to time.

Oh!... i forgot, please do not hide important things like the settings option.

If you really want to copy the Gmail interface, please study it and copy only the good things… PLEASE

PS. I have to say sorry because of my lack of knowledge writing English, it is not my first language so please be gentle.
