The recent change to how Read vs Unread emails are marked means that there is only a small dot to the left side if the email is Unread. The reason this is a major issue is that most people, myself included, are looking at the short snippet of the message and the date of the message to the right to check which emails are of interest while working our way backward until we see messages we have seen previously. Because we frequently receive important emails that look similar, without a way to easily recognize emails that have already been read while our focus on the Right side it becomes very easy to think we have reached messages we recognize even when there are still new messages left we have not seen yet. This has already happened to me twice in the short duration since this change took effect. While I understand the desire to "Visually improve user experience" changes that result in a high chance of users missing important messages is where I feel this is no longer beneficial. The purpose of visual cues, such as whether a message has been opened, are meant to make it easier to use and navigate the system. Changes that make this harder or riskier serve no purpose other than creating an artificial sense of progress.
