    I'm experiencing the same problem in both Firefox and Chrome on the Mac (using the Command key). Here are my steps to reproduce:

    1. In the message list, click the checkbox next to a message to select it.
    2. Hold down the Command key (Ctrl on Windows) and click a different message in the list.

    What I expected to happen: the message I click on should be added to the selection. This was the behavior until very recently (just the last couple of weeks).

    What happens instead: if the preview pane is hidden, the message opens for viewing and the selection doesn't change. If the preview pane is visible, all messages are deselected.

    This seems like a clear bug, not a design decision, because Shift-clicking on a message still works to create a contiguous selection. It's only Ctrl/Command-clicking which is broken.
