This didn't get too far along before Appomattox, Lee waited too long to push Davis to agree, and so never saw these troops on the battlefield himself. Additionally, many of the wealthier officers brought their slaves onto the war fronts with them..** Army of Northern Virginia which was taking heavy casualties from General Grants strategy of constant pursuit and as much contact with the ANV as he (Grant) could manage..I have no doubt that other blacks were persuaded to serve elsewhere, on the QT, (Davis thought it was a terrible idea to arm them) with the same promise by lower ranking officers, who didn't see fit to inform Richmond of what they were doing."
