… Krisnel valued time in commitment, indeed. It was this story with Jan, male and fellow ID 105 Behavioral Sciences student, that I first saw her giggled in the library. She told me that her story with him may have reached our entire “blockmates” of first year batch. This is how she narrated to me in the library, while giggling, what happened on her ‘first offering’: It was for her an ordinary day of sharing family life in discourse with our fellow “blockmates” when Jan sat near her to listen. Jan was fast enough that she did not notice Jan becoming one of the sharers in their conversation. After she mentioned to them – including Jan – a food to be prepared for her family gathering, Jan began saying why this food has health benefits and may not be commercially available because of its ingredients. Later after the class, Krisnel approached Jan to invite him for her family event with this food being prepared even if she would not remember the food he was referring to. Because Jan said that the place of her family event may not be accessible to him given the distance, she began looking for money in her bag. While Jan was asking for the directions leading to the place, Jan mentioned me that would likely accompany him – only to realize that Jan would not tell me about the family event. She initially thought of having PhP200 somewhere in her bag, telling Jan in advance that PhP100 would be for him and the other PhP100 would be for me. As she could not find the money she thought having, she promised Jan that if he would visit her with or without me, she would pay for the transportation cost. The family event was held in weekend. Time had passed without him being there that her family began saying that the food “exposed” needed to be stored already. Her waiting was “overdue” that she finally thought more of food safety than him. First day after the weekend, she was expecting Jan to explain why he did not come. Jan was fast enough to approach her, but never mentioned anything about the event. He already mentioned to her academics, interests, conflicts, and challenges but never the event. When asked by her friends that Jan might be sick but forced himself to attend class of that day, this was when she began giggling because Jan was apparently “flexing his biceps” in front of her. It was this flexing of biceps that she thought of Jan being in good health. Verbal or nonverbal, she did not perceive Jan indicating a health concern. She considered her invitation to Jan as her ‘first offering’ because she perceived him not having a “connection” – or at least familiarity – to her except with that food. It was her personality, according to her, not to offer but to immediately share with someone if the person was her friend. She was willing to serve him that food if Jan only asked for it during the family event or if Jan only reconciled with his acknowledgement that something was “lost in memory about her and the food”. She noticed how Jan was moving fast enough to visit several groups before the class began, speculating that Jan might be “preaching” more but “reaching” less because being ‘right in words’ only is true for her if one has the ‘rite in deeds’. She criticized him not because of his being knowledgeable with Bible verses but of her understanding God with Holy orders, realizing how a person even with specific instructions is lost in memory as she swore that this personal experience is beyond religious activities….
