Re: North Korean nuclear threat
Open letter to leaders and diplomats regarding N.K. nuclear threat:
Forgive my ignorance and naivety, but couldn't they try to put Kim Jong Eun and some of his cronies in exile somewhere-perhaps a remote island in the Pacific? Would that help facilitate reunification or lead to much worse? Many leaders, some much greater killers, have been exiled throughout history. This is a young man who has seen what it is like to live in Europe and outside of North Korea. Surely there are nicer places than Pyongyang to be permanently residing, especially in the midst of a crisis that could easily spell his leadership's doom.
Consider the potential alternatives and the greater good. If China doesn't keep up its end of the deal, things will probably just continue as they have been. But assuming the sanctions do work, he has two choices: go to war or surrender. The rhetoric of North Korea leaves him with no choice but to go to war. If he goes to war, he has 10 nukes that are allegedly operable. It is unlikely he will hit the U.S. What he could much more easily hit would be places like Seoul and Tokyo; two places vital to global wellbeing.
People think Kim Jong Eun and the North Korean leadership should be punished and this is true. But why should more innocent people-including people here ultimately-also be punished by a hot war on and around the Korean peninsula? Barring the clear-cut viability of Star Wars or some other program to halt North Korean military actions, I think it would be worth it to at least examine this as an option.
