Stop autoplaying videos on the Yahoo News home page
I see a lot of complaints about videos autoplaying when news articles are opened. That's annoying because it is unnessarily chewing up bandwidth. Recently when I first go to the Yahoo news home page, a video autoplays on the upper right side of the screen. I find this extremely annoying. I've used Yahoo News as my primary online news source for at least 12 years and now I think I need to look at less intrusive alternatives.

Now there's an idiotic response. Does Yahoo actually think that when one of these video ads suddenly starts playing, we stop to watch it? NO! We click that little X at the top right corner just as fast as we possibly can to shut up the racket, and we move on. After running across several of these ads, we just leave Yahoo and go somewhere else. Duh, guys at Yahoo. It doesn't matter which ads. ALL OF THEM.

I am going to remove yahoo as my homepage. The ads that pop up and can't be paused or silenced are ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been using yahoo! since the late 90's and this site constantly finds new ways to disappoint me.

who cares about ads when you cant even hear the video you are trying to watch bc the 15 other videos on the webpage are all playing at the same time. why would you think putting 15 mini articles on one page is a good idea? Been using you for my entire internet life but gonna be ending that really soon if this doesn't change

I concur. This needs to stop or I'll stop using Yahoo. I've been a Yahoo user since it's inception. It's the only search engine I use. Please stop the bandwidth chocking videos!!!
Thank you!

Hey Yahoo, it isn't the ads themselves that are the trouble. It is the automatic playing when you click on a page. I'm getting so tired of Yahoo.

I concur. This needs to stop. I open a link, often, to view content that has it's own advertisement and then this Yahoo News ad is playing right on top of it. I see that there are 55 comments.
How many do you need to stop this? A lot of people I know have given up on Yahoo for various technical reasons where the videos crash, the links don't work, email is glitchy and the changes that Yahoo makes are never pre-warned.
I, personally, LOVE Yahoo and don't want to leave. I love the way your main page looks with the newsfeed preview at the top and the endless articles down below. It catches my attention and I can find what I want, visually, very easily.
But, this with the video starting up that you can't turn off is nutty making.
Thanks!

There is also the issue of trying to promote stories with automatic videos in the upper right corner. The sound is off, but the video runs, dragging down my whole system. And of course any story that has a video plays automatically when we should be able to start it once we are prepared. There is a preference to turn off autoplay, but it's clearly just a feel good measure. once you leave the page and end up on another with a video, it autoplays. With all of these issues, my employer is considering adding the whole of Yahoo to their blocked sites that kill bandwidth and are disruptive.

There are two areas, at least, where we see the autoplay ads. Some--a lot--appear when we access the home page. Any time. Every time. I try to click the "Hide Ad" feature and it goes away. Until the next time I access the home page, anyway.
Another patently irritating time is when we try to log in to our email.
The ads seem to vary every day or so. They seem to be for the latest movie or perhaps TV show. In the recent past, there was an autoplay ad for "The Lone Ranger" movie (Johnny Depp or whomever it was in whiteface trying to look like Tonto). More recently there was an autoplay ad for some kind of Apple (TM) product. That ad didn't even have a "Hide Ad" feature readily visible.
We understand Yahoo is an ad-supported business but we as customers should have a little respect, too, from you.

This has gotten markedly worse of late...I used to be able to tolerate and manage them, but they've gotten untenably intrusive the last few weeks. Here's my specific complaints right now:
1) You can pause them, but in a minute or two they'll refresh and autoplay themselves again. They used to stay paused if you paused them.
2) You can get multiple video ads in the sidebar simultaneously, where they used to only appear in the topmost slot. This multiplies the other problems exponentially.
3) Sometimes "mute" doesn't do anything, I have to manually mute my computer speakers.
4) Most damning, whatever code is used to embed them is HORRIBLE BUSH LEAGUE code! Whenever a new video tries to auto-load and auto-play, my whole browser will freeze for several seconds...and with multiple video ads on the sidebar its like whack-a-mole trying to find them and keep them all paused. Even when they're just running, not loading, my browser slows down so much that there's a 1-2 second lag when I'm typing comments between when I type and when it appears on screen.
Suggested fixes: Prevent video ads from loading anywhere but the topmost sidebar slot. Prevent them from refreshing until they reach the end of their duration. And simplify the code so its not so memory-intensive.

It's not just the side bar. I just opened the homepage and an add in the middle of the page where the video or picture of the main story should be started playing. I'm at work. I have my volume up loud so I can hear when I get a message for work. I have yahoo set as my homepage, but pretty soon that's going to change because this is disrupting coworkers around me.

This is particularly annoying when I am listening to music streamed from WRR, my favorite radio station.

Yahoo, just stop doing all autoplay whether it's ads or other content. If I want to see the video, I will click on it. It's so annoying when I'm trying to read the article (which is what I prefer) and the video starts to play. Even worse, when it goes straight from that video to another video on some other completely unrelated story that I'm not interested in. Just stop it.

I agree. You can't stop them and I have to mute my computer, wait for the ad and then proceed to video I actually am interested in.
