Adjustments to IL that would fix a lot of issues
Hello Yahoo Fantasy Team,
I’m reaching out regarding the changes to the Injured List IL Eligibility rules for the 2026–27 fantasy basketball season.
While I appreciate the decision to allow players designated OUT to be placed directly on IL, I believe there is a significant issue with how injury statuses are handled between games.
The main problem is that players who are clearly injured and expected to miss multiple games can lose their OUT designation and revert to Questionable between games, even when there is little indication they are ready to return.
This creates a frustrating situation for fantasy managers, particularly in leagues that have a limited number of weekly player acquisitions.
For example:
- On Monday, a player is ruled OUT with an injury and is expected to miss approximately 7–10 days.
- The fantasy manager places that player on IL and uses one of their limited weekly acquisitions to pick up a replacement.
- On Tuesday, Yahoo changes the injured player’s designation from OUT to Questionable because his team has not officially ruled him out for the next game.
- The player is still injured and unlikely to play, but the manager can no longer make additional roster moves without removing him from IL and potentially dropping another player.
In leagues that only allow three acquisitions per week, this becomes particularly problematic. Managers are forced to make unnecessary roster decisions based on fluctuating injury designations rather than the player’s actual health or expected availability.
I would strongly encourage Yahoo to consider one of the following adjustments:
- Introduce a minimum IL eligibility period: Once a player is designated OUT and placed on IL, allow him to remain IL-eligible for a minimum period, such as seven days, regardless of whether his designation temporarily changes to Questionable.
- Maintain OUT status for extended injuries: When a player has been officially reported as expected to miss a week or longer, keep the OUT designation until there is a meaningful update indicating he is close to returning.
- Allow commissioner-controlled IL eligibility: Give league commissioners the option to determine whether Questionable or Day-to-Day players can remain eligible for IL, allowing leagues to choose the system that works best for them.
I understand the need for accurate injury reporting, and I am not suggesting that Yahoo should misrepresent a player’s official injury status. However, a player’s injury designation and their eligibility to remain on IL do not necessarily need to be tied together so rigidly.
The current system can unintentionally penalize managers for making reasonable roster decisions, particularly when they are dealing with genuine multi-game injuries.
I believe introducing some flexibility would significantly improve the fantasy basketball experience without undermining competitive fairness.
I would appreciate it if your team could review this feedback and consider making adjustments to the IL eligibility system.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards
Thank you for your feedback regarding the IL rules. We will pass it along to our team. Players who were out for a game will have their status changed to Probable, Questionable, or Doubtful after the game unless they have been ruled out for 3+ games. If they have been ruled out for 3+ games, they will keep the Out status. We are working to fix the issue where statuses change shortly after the game ends and make it so the statuses change at the end of the day after all games have ended.
