Scoring - New Scoring Categories
Requests to add new scoring categories in Yahoo Fantasy Hockey.

I’m writing as a long‑time fantasy hockey commissioner and highly engaged user to share feedback on why my league ultimately moved from Yahoo to ESPN—and, more importantly, what changes could make Yahoo Fantasy Hockey the most robust platform in the space.
The decision to leave Yahoo was not taken lightly. We value the platform and its history. However, the driving factor was limited scoring flexibility, which made it difficult to accurately reflect player impact in today’s NHL. Simply put, we ran out of meaningful options to evolve our league.
Here are a few specific enhancements that would significantly improve the scoring model and better mirror real hockey value:
1. Defensive Point (Skater Level)
Defense in hockey is more than blocks and hits. A configurable “defensive point” would allow leagues to reward strong two‑way play—particularly for shutdown defensemen who drive possession and suppress scoring but may not accumulate traditional stats.
2. Hat Tricks as a Distinct Scoring Event
Hat tricks are rare, momentum‑shifting achievements. Recognizing them as a standalone scoring category (rather than just the sum of goals) adds excitement and properly rewards elite offensive performances.
3. Overtime Loss (Team or Goalie Context)
Overtime losses are a meaningful part of the modern NHL standings and competitive balance. Allowing commissioners to score OTLs—especially in goalie or team‑based contexts—adds realism and strategy.
4. Penalty Minutes (PIM)
Many established leagues still view PIM as an important dimension of player value, particularly for roster balance. The ability to include (or optionally exclude) PIM keeps Yahoo flexible for both traditional and modern league styles.
Collectively, these additions would:Create greater scoring depth and differentiation
Reward real hockey impact, not just surface stats
Give commissioners the flexibility to evolve leagues year over year
Reduce churn to competing platforms that offer broader customizationYahoo has an opportunity to reclaim leadership by leaning into configurability for serious fantasy players. With these scoring enhancements, I—and many commissioners like me—would strongly consider bringing leagues back.
Thank you for continuing to invest in the product and for listening to your most engaged users. I’m happy to provide further feedback or test new scoring options if helpful.
Best regards,
Tanner -

Is Yahoo ever going to increase the number of scoring categories that are available for Fantasy Hockey? It's been the same list for more than a decade: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN6834.html
Would love to see some changes there, for example Shootout Goals or Shootout Attempts would be great. Other scoring categories Empty Net Goals, OT Goals, Even Strength Goals, Faceoff Win %, etc which nhl.com has stats for. Thanks.

Adding in takeaways and giveaways adds to scoring complexity and rewards/penalizes all skaters. An advanced stat but yet a good way to separate certain players.

A few suggestions to add for Rotisserie scoring categories:
Even Strength Goals and/or Even Strength Points: Players on the powerplay already score more than others, so even strength points are a better stat for good 2nd line players, etc.
Reverse ranked PIMs (i.e. negative PIMs): Penalties are considered a negative attribute by many
Primary assists (if possible)
Average Total on Ice (if possible)

Hi, I think adding the category Faceoff Win % would be an excellent addition to add as a possibility for some leagues. It would be relatively easy to implement since you keep track of faceoff wins and losses already, and you already have shooting percentage.
In some leagues I am in, centers and dual eligible wingers are over valued when faceoffs won is a stat. If we make it faceoff win %, then only the guys who win faceoffs at a high level are valued better. This makes sense because some centers get a lot of volume but aren't necessarily a great faceoff guy.

Just like wins/loses/saves/etc. Add an Overtime loss statistic for goalies.

I have managers in my keeper league that live in different time zones around the world. I would love to see a long draft option where the manager has hours to pick, not minutes. This allows mangers the flexibility to pick at there convenance. Fantrax offers this option and it is amazing.

Hi there, my league used Yahoo before but went back to our old app because Yahoo didn’t offer a hattrick point, or OT/shootout loss point for goalies in points leagues for hockey. We would like to come back but want to see a bonus hattrick point available in the scoring settings, as well as a point awarded for a goalie who loses in OT or a Shootout like real life.

Hits and block should be scoring categories in all leagues, instead of plus/minus which is more to do with the team rather then the player.
The mock drafts that help you prepare, don't even include Blocks, which is a category in 2 of the 3 standard public leagues (Roto and Points) -

Taking the physical element completely out of Fantasy Hockey was a bad idea and not reflective of actual hockey. Add it back in as an 11th category or as replacement for plus/minus or blocked shots.

To add a defensive aspect to player scoring (outside of blocks, hits, and +/- which is questionable at best) the addition of takeaways should be added as an available stat to use.

There's a Hits category and there's a Penalty Box Minutes category, but not a Hits/Penalty Box Minutes category. I would think this would be a very popular category among fantasy hockey managers. In fantasy baseball yahoo! combines Holds/Saves in a category. I think the same should be done in fantasy hockey for those who like Hits and Penalty Box Minutes but can't have both in leagues like mine where we use that category for fun, but don't want to use up two category spaces for both.

For category scoring leagues, faceoff wins is a broken stat because it gives dual position centerman a huge advantage. Take Draisaitl for example, he is a C/LW that is currently 17th in average faceoff wins. Winning those faceoffs from a guy eligible for a LW roster spot is massive. Having a simple Faceoff % stat would balance the dual position advantage out for category leagues.

If you see the average stats per game, without the number of games played, we are really only seeing half the info.

FO% and Takeaways stats please
Fighting Majors as an alternative to PIMs would be nice too

Please add a hat trick bonus, similar to the shutout bonus
Draft Kings and Fan Duel both have them because people love them. It makes the scoring more fun. The shutout bonus is the most exciting part of the week right now. A hat trick is more rare too. -

Yes this would make good players on bad teams more Fantasy relevant.
This change would also make Defensemen more relevant. It's hard to find good Defensemen in Yahoo leagues, but this would dramatically improve that situation. -

PLUS/MINUS should be removed as a scoring category and be replaced with HITS and/or BLOCKS to make more players worthwhile to draft and roster.
