Yes, bring back those Yahoo links along the top. The new page header takes as much (or a tiny bit more) vertical space than the old header and loses this valuable feature!
The Yahoo links along the top (news, finance, sports, etc.) served two very important purposes: (1) they were very convenient for the user, and (2) they promoted other Yahoo sites.
I'm not happy with the extra click and the delay needed to reach Yahoo News or another Yahoo site. And the fact that it opens in another browser tab is not necessarily a feature -- for me it's another annoyance as I have to go back to close the mail tab.
Having those links visible on the page instead of hidden promotes other Yahoo sites. It informs users about all the different sites that exist. It makes them easy to reach, or to try new ones for the curious. I started using Yahoo News *because* I saw those links at the top -- never would have done so otherwise.
So c'mon, make it easy again and promote your brand!

ps -- on another topic, if you want to satisfy even more people, add another setting to maximize page use for mail by eliminating as much as possible of everything else on the page. I don't need that but everyone has different preferences (and different screen sizes, vision issues, etc.)
