Graphical display of stats on live stats page - Distance from competition section
Hi I wanted to talk about the graphics used to display the distance from competition information.
My league came down to the wire, my friend needed 2 assists to force a tie for first place, and maybe 16 rebounds to win it all.
I took a screen shot of his distance from competition page and it doesn't in any way represent this information well. Indeed you can't see from the graphics how close those two categories are.
In fact, at the start of the day when I took the screen shot he was ahead on one person in steals by only 4, behind the league leader in assists by perhaps 12, and ahead of a competitor in rebounds by perhaps 15.
None of this info is clearly visible.
I think the stat columns should be bars and the nearby teams in each stat should be magnified into the rest of the space. The bars easily convey the placement of each team in the league for that stat. Then, the magnified area extends to the right to show close competitors.
The range of the magnification would need to be customized for each stat. If a player has a competitor with 20 more blocks and another with 20 less blocks, then the magnification would show significant distance between them, because 20 blocks is a lot. Points, by comparison, would need to be represented as very close to each other, given 20 additional points and 20 less points, because 20 points is only 1 or 2 player games. The magnification could end at a given stat range, or extend to the next closest competitor at top or bottom outside a given range.
