Don't waive the innings limit on shortened weeks!
If leagues don’t offer the option to choose between short vs. long weeks during Opening Week and the Mid-Summer Classic, then the pitching innings limit should not be waived.
Teams that choose to load up on relievers instead of starting pitchers already gain a strategic advantage. That’s a conscious roster decision. Allowing them to win multiple pitching categories with as little as 0.1 innings pitched (e.g., one save with perfect ratios) only amplifies that imbalance.
In previous years, our league defaulted to longer scoring periods (around 10 days). This naturally eliminated the need to waive innings limits and created a more balanced and fair competition.
After 16 years with Yahoo Fantasy Sports, I’m not sure if CBS Sports handles this better—but it’s something I’ll definitely be evaluating more closely.
At a minimum, leagues should have flexibility:
Option for short vs. long weeks
Option to keep or waive innings limits
Give commissioners and leagues the ability to choose what works best for competitive balance.
