I’d genuinely like to understand what the actual argument is against this change.

From a fantasy player’s perspective, moving the default public-league playoffs approximately two weeks earlier seems like the most logical solution. I’ve yet to hear a legitimate reason why this would make the fantasy experience worse.

Baseball is already an extremely long season. We’re talking about moving the fantasy playoffs up two or three weeks — not eliminating a meaningful portion of the season. What’s the real downside to cutting two or three weeks off the fantasy calendar when there are still roughly five and a half months of MLB games leading up to the playoffs? At some point, having a fantasy season run as long as possible isn’t necessarily better if those final weeks are also when player availability becomes the most unpredictable.

The problems with extremely late-season playoffs are only going to become more pronounced as MLB continues to evolve. We are already seeing more player rest, workload management, skipped starts, bullpen changes, injuries, and teams making decisions based on their real-life postseason situations. There is no reason to think that trend is going to reverse and not potentially get worse.

If anything, Yahoo should be getting ahead of this rather than waiting for the problem to become even more significant. Especially when theres more people who would want this, than not.

The only other explanation I can come up with is that Yahoo simply benefits from keeping fantasy players engaged with the app and website for those additional two or three weeks. Obviously, I can’t say that’s the reason, but from the outside it is difficult to understand what other significant downside there would be to starting the public-league playoffs earlier.

There is also an additional benefit that I don’t think gets enough consideration: starting fantasy baseball playoffs earlier would reduce the overlap with the NFL season. That’s particularly relevant for Yahoo’s most active fantasy users who spend the most money and may be managing 20-30 leagues across multiple sports.

Ultimately, I’m not asking Yahoo to eliminate flexibility. Private leagues can continue using whatever playoff schedule their commissioners prefer. I’m simply suggesting that Yahoo make the earlier schedule the default for public leagues, where Yahoo controls the format. Or at least give an option for the majority who would like this to happen.

So if Yahoo’s position is that the current schedule is preferable, I’d genuinely appreciate hearing the specific reasoning behind that decision. What are the actual benefits of keeping the playoffs this late, and what is the downside to moving them approximately two weeks earlier?

Because from the perspective of a fantasy player, I can identify numerous benefits to moving them earlier, while I haven’t yet heard or thought of a compelling reason not to.

I’d appreciate a substantive answer rather than simply having the suggestion acknowledged and closed out.
