Learn from Gmail!!
Gmail has a separate box for promotions, separate box for social media related messages and legit inbox worthy messages in my inbox. I get notified about those legit messages which is very less often. But with yahoo mail, i get notification all the time, I try unsubscribing but doesnt seem to work. Finally I have let it happen. I have given my gmail to important contacts and I come to check yahoo mail once in a while to see it flooded with all sort of messages. Oh wait I got a notification...and its an unimportant yahoo mail. Learn from google I would recommend. No harm in learning.
