Not being able to sort by last name is a MAJOR, MAJOR gaff.
It makes the yahoo contacts unworkable. What would it take to start a protest group to picket outside the head of verizon and yahoo's house to get their attention? (No, don't do that). This Co-vid in-house quarantine is making their botched sort more critical at times when I'm trying to get information to people.
This is really serious. It's not a game.
What if someone dies because a long time professional user of Yahoo is rushing to get critical virus information out to staff or colleagues and overlooks a key person he calls 'Bill' because the Yahoo sort has his professional email listed under 'William" ?
In my case I went to send an article out to some people and an email I used was obsolete and bounced. His last name hasn't changed, but the two emails aren't together because whatever he's listed at on one isn't the same on the new up to date address. I want to get rid of the old address but cannot easily find it.
I agree with G Bisaillon below about how much time I have spent on this issue.
The individual comment by the originator Mike Frank might not be item #1 on the list, but I'll bet that if you added up the comments from all the people who have lodged a complaint it IS darned near number 1.
I hope a lawsuit gets started over this because the error is so fundamentally basic to the service. I feel this board is a yahoo 'CYA' (Cover Your Buttocks) that nobody will read and act upon except Lawyers AFTER something bad happens.
I want it documented that somebody can potentially die because of this error.
It's serious, fundamental and obvious and Yahoo has been told about it many, many times..
Sorting by first name is useless unless you're 15 years old and have a small circle of friends. Was this decision made by twenty-somethings? Or professionals who aren't using Yahoo but prefer gmail instead after they go home from work?
Try organizing your refrigerator by putting baking soda next to bacon next to broccoli next to butter simply because what you commonly call them starts with the letter 'B.'

I guess the techies at Yahoo aren't smart enough to figure out what they did to ***** this up from the older version and correct it.

Before getting to this point and posting - I researched the issue through dozens of chat boards, and help desks to see if there was a way to have contacts sorted by last name, and not by first name. It appears there are over 200,000 people using this service that have complained about the same issue for almost 2 years. When will Yahoo fix the issue and give your customers the functionality they need to be efficient? At least give them the choice on what field to sort by like almost all the other free email services do. (Gmail, AOL, Outlook, Zoho, Mail.com, etc...)

Firstly make the contact lists efficient and user friendly. Let customers choose if they prefer first name first, a few may. It should not be your choice but ours. Then, when you have reestablished all the good ideas that have been lost, make it pretty if you feel that helps. In other words firstly make it work then worry about the design features.
It is inept of Yahoo, to say the least, that lists of contact names are sorted alphabetically by first name. Any properly organised user will need them to be sorted by surname.

how can we do it. Lots of complaints, no answers

How do I alphabet contact list?

Change contact list back to sort alphabetically by last name. At least give us back the option. Please stop making changes like this.

YES PLEASE! I like the "OLD" Classic yahoo better. That was MUCH easier to just click on an address and "assign" that person to a group.
HORRIBLE that I can not alphabetize within a group folder. My folders in this "new Improved ????" YAHOO mail is a MESS! Names within a group are listed at random.....HORRIBLE!
Please please allow us to organize within a group folder or better yet...BRING BACK the OLD YAHOO Classic mail!
I agree - it's terrible now to work with contacts.

The new contact format is terrible. Contacts are no longer alphabetized and half my contacts seem to have disappeared.
Put Contact Lists back in alphabetical order. Give us back the ability to PRINT the lists. And let us add people to lists the old way, too!!!
Whose idea was it to list the contacts in alphabetical order by FIRST name. Who is the idiot that came up with that idea? AND.....of course....there is no way to edit it and list them alphabetically by last name like normal people would do.

Yahoo MUST allow the contact list to sorted by last name. I know of no list of names that cannot be sorted by last name, nor do I know of any list that appears in order by first name. It appears that Yahoo combined the contact list first name and last name into one name, not separately as first name and last name, as was the case before. Having a list of names listed only by first name is virtually unusable.

All of a sudden my contacts are being sorted by First Name, although I tried, I cannot get my contacts sorted by last name.
If I revert to "classic" mail it sorts by last name.
alphabetize by last name and then when "To: button is presed tha names appear in that order.
Sorting contacts by last names is common sense.
What goes thru the heads of those in control of Yahoo?

Contacts are sorted by first name. I can't sort them by last name. Please correct this.
