New calendar only displays about 20 characters per event?!!?
Pre 2011, the Yahoo calendar displayed every event title, exactly as written, with no limit on character length. Additionally, there was a neat feature where you could roll the mouse over the event, and a temporary pop-up window would open, and display the entire event title (regardless of length) AND ALSO everything that was in the "Description" section in the pop-up window. Great. So I can find the event I'm looking for, and if I need more info, I can immediately see it--and I didn't have to click it to open.
Then in 2011, you made a change where the "roll over to display" was gone. Totally gone. So if there's something in the notes, I have to open it. But at least there was unlimited character length in the title. I could still see all 100 characters that may be in the event title, displayed right there in the calendar. This had the "unfortunate" side effect of making some "days" much larger that others when in the month view. If I have 10 events, and the titles each take up 2-3 scroll lines per event, that particular day in month view is going to consume half the page! But that was acceptable to me, because I could still immediately find something at a glance. And if I need more info, I just pop it open to read the notes.
This brings us today. One line for each event. JUST ONE LINE FOR EACH EVENT. So now similar events all look...well, similar, because they're only on one line, and that's all you get. Neat "roll over to view feature" reinstated like it was pre-2011? Negative. So it's basically the worst features of both worlds. Sure, this probably made some web designer happy, because, "***, the calendar is supposed to be a neat box! A bunch of squares! Squares don't move or change shapes! I'll MAKE the mr f***r fit! SQUARES!!" Yep--that's what we got. Lots and lots of uniform squares. And each event gets a single line. And it cuts off at about 20 characters, in order to make that event fit on a single line. "Well, that data's not GONE. Just click on it, it'll open a box to display everything." No, I agree, you CLICK on it. And when you're done, you hit the "X" in the upper-right corner. OH SHOOT you removed the "X"! So now, after the unnecessary click in the first place, I then have to move my cue to somewhere else and make a second click, to remove the box. Oh, and then I get to click on the next event, and the next, until I finally find what I'm looking for.
If you're going to jam every event into a single 20 character line, the least you can do is bring back that "click-less" pop-up, like pre-2011, so that I can instantly see the rest of the info in that event. Please? And if you refuse, can you please put the "X" on the pop-up again, to speed my closure of it? Seriously? Who missed THAT step?
And I hate the colors provided, the ones you can use to differentiate separate users' calendars. The color-coding? The blue is SO BLUE, and the yellow is SO YELLOW, and the red/orange/magenta (whatever that is) is SO ORANGE. Complicating matters, you made the fonts on the events just a tad smaller and thinner. So between the bolder background colors and the thinner letters, I have to take just an extra second to make out the letters. I know the mantra for building a new website is "Newer! Bolder! Fresher! Faster!" but how about we tone down the "boldness"? Just a little more faded, like it was last week? Or make the letters stand out just a tiny bit more. One or the other.
Attached gripe: the event time used to be BOLD, and the event lettering was regular font. Now it's just a jumbled regular font. Does that make a difference? Yes, it does, if it's an all-day event versus a timed event. The all-day events were at the top with no bold; the timed events had a clearly-readable BOLD time. Now ALL EVENTS are a flat, uniform, indistinguishable regular font. In small letters. With only a single line with 20 characters. On a TOO BOLD colored background. C'mon--I thought you guys were INNOVATORS. I can get a calendar like this on my Commodore 64!
Thank you and keep up the good work.
