Usability Feedback: Critical issues with the new Yahoo Mail interface
Dear Yahoo Mail Team,I am writing to express my strong frustration with the recent updates to Yahoo Mail. Instead of improving functionality, the redesign adds excessive clutter, disruptive UI elements, and frustrating limitations that make basic email management a chore.
Below is a list of the major usability issues making the platform difficult to use:
Intrusive "Streak" Popups: Notifications celebrating that I have checked my email "X days in a row" are completely unnecessary. Gamifying a basic communication tool adds zero value, interrupts my workflow, and forces me to manually dismiss unwanted popups.
Distracting Avatar Circles: The colored circles placed at the front of each email entry add visual noise without serving any functional purpose, leaving the screen cluttered and much harder to read.
Hover Action Overlays: The popup action buttons that appear when hovering over an email line block the subject line entirely, making it nearly impossible to scan or preview email headers smoothly.
Visually Strainful Design & Low Contrast: The flat, bright white background paired with thin gray text lacks proper contrast, making it confusing to navigate and causing genuine eye strain during regular use.
Forced Inbox Categorization: Sorting messages automatically into "Primary," "Offers," and "Social" tabs should be an optional preference. Users should be allowed to manage and categorize their own emails.
- Aggressive Banner Ads: Prominent right-hand display ads and native ads built to look like actual emails consume valuable screen real estate and lead to accidental clicks.
- Aggressive Banner Ads: Prominent right-hand display ads and native ads built to look like actual emails consume valuable screen real estate and lead to accidental clicks.
Loss of Multi-Tab Navigation: Removing the ability to open separate emails or search results in dedicated internal tabs severely hampers multitasking and references across messages.
Hidden Action Buttons: Essential management tools (Delete, Archive, Move to Folder) are hidden behind hover states or overflow menus (...), requiring unnecessary extra clicks for routine inbox cleanup.
Inconvenient Compose Toolbar: Moving text formatting controls to floating footers breaks typing workflows and increases unnecessary mouse movement.
Inflexible Folder Access & Storage Prompts: Subfolders are harder to monitor due to secondary dropdown menus, and aggressive storage warnings constantly push users toward paid Yahoo Mail Plus upgrades.
Screen Freezes when trying to delete emails in bulk
I strongly urge your product and design teams to address these flaws and give users a setting to revert to a clean, simple, functional layout.
Sincerely,
Susan
PS I don't have time to do your job for you. Bring back the Old email format that worked without these flaws and Fire all the new design programmers because they are a failure! This way you don't have to beg for money from all the users because you don't have to pay these programmers! Nobody asked for these expensive updates and these annoying ads. All I want is a basic email so I can run my business. Thank you, Susan
