It says I need to free up storage but I have deleted thousands of emails and it hasn't changed. It needs to update. Also, it takes forever to delete by 50

Hi Suzanne as mentioned in the email and in the help pages, you need to Empty Trash/Spam after you delete your emails. Once you delete either of those folders, you will see your Storage numbers decrease. Hope this helps.
