customization lacking in new (and in basic) mail client
The settings icon was needlessly hard to find. It should be in the upper right corner. In the new mail version it is buried under the folders on the bottom left. You have to click the three dots to find it in the expanded menu. There are only two theme choices (light and dark). There needs to be more customization (fonts, spacing, background colors, etc.). I miss being able to star emails directly from the inbox list instead of having to right click to see the feature. I like that there is an option to revert to the basic mail UI. I prefer basic UI except for the fact that you can't change the theme or background. Basic UI seems to be permanently stuck in light mode.

Hi Anna, happy to answer all your points!
1. Settings - Yes, when there's a new design it makes sense for everyone to try and find Settings. But after one gets used to the design, Settings is almost never clicked. Therefore, we have no plans move it.
2. Themes - We had a whole bunch, but a majority of our users stuck with the default color. The usage was too low and the upkeep was too much. Therefore, we have simplified our themes. We know not the answer you want, but we wanted to give you context. It wasn't popular.
3. Starred Emails - You can still starred emails from the Inbox. When you hover over the email, icons will show up on the right side. One of them is Starred.

Yes, the layout was so important. I don't understand the new changes. I used the enhanced themes with specific color layouts. It helped me feel more organized. I don't support the new look at all.
