Separate special teams & defense into two separate roster spots
The only thing I am not a fan of in the scoring system is the concept of a bad defensive performance being potentially boosted by a rare and somewhat random luck punt/kick return touchdown.
My suggestion is why don’t we separate special teams & defense into two different roster spots; for example, if I think Pittsburgh’s defense is really good but their special teams is not so good, I should be able to select Pittsburgh’s defense for only defense and a different team’s special teams unit for only special teams, such as maybe Buffalo.
Here’s an example of what I don’t like about the current combining of both units into one: if I have Minnesota’s defense and they allow 30 points to their opponent and they get no sacks, no interceptions, no fumble recoveries, etc, my team defense score would rightly be a -1. Then Minnesota’s kick returner has a fluke play where he brings a kick all the way back for a TD, and for some reason, my score suddenly changes from a -1 to a +5 and my defense had nothing to do with those points. My defense’s overall score is suddenly boosted for something they didn’t earn? The kick returner earned those points, not my defense.
So how about we separate them into two separate units? That way defenses only get credit for what they earned, and special teams units only get credit for what they earned. I would even be fine with lumping the individual kicker roster spot into the entire team special teams unit if adding an additional roster spot is concerning to the creators at Yahoo. The scoring format for the team special teams unit I suggest would be points for both punt & kick return TD’s, as well as the punt/kick return yardage. TD’s and yardage are the only metrics used to tally the special teams score. Using that method will also not over burden casual fantasy football managers with too many stats to track.
And just to close my suggestion out, if Yahoo doesn’t want to make this the official PPR league format, how about at least make it an option? At least make it a customizable setting that fantasy commissioners can set before the draft starts?
