How can we improve New Mail?

horizontal scrolling keeps switching messages

this is extremely frustrating. using touchpad or trackpoint to scroll down a message and inadvertently SWITCHING TO THE NEXT/PREVIOUS MESSAGE because it horizontally scrolled a bit .... WTF
