Season (avg) is a per game stat and should not factor in TOI/G. This makes no sense to me....just because a guy has a better 'per minute' average does not mean that his coach is gonna play him for the same number of minutes as someone else who has the same 'per minute' average. Yahoo please change this! Thank you.

This situation may call for two equations: 1/ Points for distance of the punt (the longer the better) 2/ For punts fielded inside the 20 yard line, points for closeness to the goal line (the closer to the goal line the better). These two equations should reflect good football strategy well enough.
I think Chris is correct that a punt that results in a touchback should be scored as though it was fielded at the 20.
I'd just as soon ignore the length of the return for punter statistics. It can be scored by giving the other team points for return yardage.
The remaining problem is how to score a blocked punt. -
