Designated Injury Backup
I’d like to suggest an optional Fantasy Football feature called Designated Injury Backup (DIB).
DIB is intended to reduce one of the most frustrating forms of fantasy-football bad luck: correctly starting a player who then suffers a legitimate game-ending injury early in his NFL game.
The concept adds a limited version of real-world roster depth. A manager could predesignate an eligible bench player as an injury backup at commissioner-enabled positions. If a starter suffers a qualifying game-ending injury, the manager would keep the starter’s earned fantasy production and receive only the appropriate later portion of the designated backup’s production.
The system is designed specifically to avoid hindsight and best-ball behavior: DIB selections are made in advance, use actual bench depth, and lock before the first scheduled NFL kickoff of the fantasy week.
I believe DIB could add meaningful roster-management strategy while softening an unusually arbitrary form of injury luck without eliminating risk or rewarding poor lineup decisions.
I have developed a detailed proposal covering the complete scoring method, timing rules, FLEX eligibility, overtime, multiple injuries, anti-gaming safeguards, commissioner settings, edge cases, and platform implementation.
Because this forum is public, I am not posting the full proposal here, but I would be happy to provide it directly to the Yahoo Fantasy product team if there is interest in reviewing the concept.
