@scott lindner: I completely agree with your analysis, it's extremely pertinent (and might unfortunately be true, i.e. they've retired the mess for now, but next time there won't be no way back (possibly just the Basic).

By using a trick, from the Basic email it was possible to get the previous GUI version (attention, this is the CLASSIC, not Basic, like some people seem to misleadingly think and therefore ask for). But one had to do the trick every time the browser with the Yahoo! email tab was launched.
Now I realized that the CLASSIC was back, but an announcement was lurking: "Coming soon: An improved Yahoo Mail. Less of the stuff you don’t want. More control over the stuff you do. Learn more"
So we now know this will be imposed upon us, regardless what we want, paying or no paying customers.
Maybe we can let know the big hat what we think about this not needed change into worse:
